A NEW YEAR'S EVE TO REMEMBER

The eleventh annual LiveWorkPlay New Year's Eve in Ottawa party went back to its roots with a members-only blast at the Delta Ottawa. There was delicious food (people are still raving about the roast beef) and DJ Carlo was a huge hit as well. Nobody could remember the dance floor being packed so early - it was barely past 9pm when things got jumping!

When the clock struck midnight there was a crowd of 80 on the floor to share hugs and kisses and best wishes for 2010. As the night wore on Carlo called "last dance" at least 3 times before the formal festivities closed down. Many LiveWorkPlay members spent the night at the hotel, and there were bus pools, car pools, and taxi pools organized to get everyone else home safely.

The spirit of the evening was captured with photos and video! What does next year hold? LiveWorkPlay is wide open to your suggestions!

HEADING FOR THE BEACHES AND NYC

LiveWorkPlay youth and adult members have been saving up for the opportunity to enjoy international travel.

Adult members chose two different destinations this year, first up is Turks and Caicos which departs January 15, and next comes Sandpiper Florida on March 7.

2010 will be the first time youth members will be crossing international borders on a LiveWorkPlay trip and they are very excited to be flying to New York City! Their trip will launch July 12.

The United Way of Ottawa contributes to the LiveWorkPlay costs of supporting the youth trip, including the planning week where members come together to make decisions about the activities they want to enjoy.

International travel. Airports. Public transportation. The safety issues! The costs! The risks! You may be wondering...why do we do it? That's a good question, and it has many answers. Click here to learn more.

FABULOUS FESTIVE FAMILY FEAST

After many years of the popular Family Fun nights, December 18 was the launch of a new LiveWorkPlay tradition: Family Feasts! The Festive Family Feast drew a surprising crowd of 130 people to share a delicious meal, listen to a series of updates and announcements, enter contests, win prizes, and enjoy holiday songs performed by Maureen Moloughney.

Some highlights of the night included the preview of a movie being developed by adult members called "The Date." The most amusing moment of the evening probably came when Daniel Harris presented a video reminder to parents to "call the hotline" (LiveWorkPlay provides weekly updated telephone hotlines). As some of the potential consequences of failing to call the hotline were reviewed in a humorous fashion, more than a few feasters in the room blushed and were heard to say "I think he's talking about me!" Click here for photos and video from this event.

Other announcements on December 18 included: more than 1100 hours contributed by the volunteer team since the end of August, several new employment positions being enjoyed by adult members, and the opportunity access support to plan for the holiday season.

Next up is the Spring Fling Family Feast on March 26. Attendees can expect another delicious meal, and we'll once again finish up with music. Performer Dave Milliken will be on hand with voice and guitar as we emerge from hibernation and embrace the joys of the spring season! Register early and take advantage of a 25% discount. A reminder that although the Feast is a members-only event, members are welcome to bring friends and extended family.

RDSP & ESTATES FEBRUARY 27

LiveWorkPlay will host a one day conference on February 27 with the morning dedicated to Wills, Trusts, and Estates and an afternoon for learning about the Registered Disability Savings Plan. This is the second in a series of one day conferences, the first being the Question of Safety workshop in November.

Our expert for the day is Brendon Pooran, principal lawyer at Pooranlaw. The morning session will be supported by The Law Society of Ontario and the afternoon by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada. The afternoon session will be immediately followed by the opportunity for brief individual consultations. Click here for more information and registration (limited seating).

SELF-ADVOCACY NEWS

As reported last issue, at the invitation of the Canadian Association of Community Living (and on the occasion of the UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities) Caroline Matte made a presentation to the Parliamentary Press Gallery of Canada. In addition to a newspaper article published by Canwest News Service on December 4, Community Living Leaders published two articles later in the month that explored the story with particular attention to Caroline's life journey.

In other self-advocacy news, LiveWorkPlay youth and adult members spent an evening with representatives of the Ministry of Community and Social Services on December 8. Some of the hot topics of the night included challenges with the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) income supports. For example, Amanda Manuel talked about how scary it was to get a letter about benefits being cut off as a result of a mistake made by a Ministry worker. Cooper Gage expressed concern for people with intellectual disabilities who are working in sheltered workshops where they are paid only a few dollars a week.

Although much of the discussion ranged beyond the normal scope of work for MCSS representatives Mary Jelinic and Marcel St. Jean, they were open to all topics and have facilitated new relationships for LiveWorkPlay and ODSP staff.

ANNUAL CONFERENCE MAY 26-29

The 2010 Annual Conference of Community Living Ontario takes place May 26-29 at the Sheraton Parkway Toronto North Hotel (Richmond Hill). LiveWorkPlay will be offering financial support to up to four adult members who would like to attend (details to follow).

Although registration for the conference is not yet available, if you plan to attend without applying for LiveWorkPlay financial support please click here for more information and reserve your hotel room as soon as possible, as space is limited.

COOKING UP A RECIPE FOR SUCCESS

The annual Recipe for Success Culinary Adventure and Annual Auction event is the most important LiveWorkPlay fundraiser of the year. The 2010 edition is tentatively scheduled for April 8, and we are thrilled to announce that Bank of America has once again agreed to be the main event sponsor.

It doesn't take much for this event to be successful, it just takes everyone doing their part. In addition to helping with donors and sponsors, one of the easiest and most important ways to contribute is to invite and accompany members of your extended networks to the event - neighbours, co-workers, and friends! And after all the excitement generated by this addition last year, core LiveWorkPlay supporters are once again being asked to provide their home-baked goodies (appetizers and desserts).

There will be many more details ironed out throughout the month of January, and LiveWorkPlay supporters will soon receive their auction package. The package provides the tools necessary for recruiting donations and selling tickets. But you can start now by preparing a list of businesses to contact for donations and people to invite to the event!

FAMILY CONFERENCE DRAWS CROWD

The LiveWorkPlay Family Conference 2009 was held on November 21. This year the topic was "A Question Of Safety" and for the first time in the 5 year history of this event registration was open to the general public. There was a huge turnout as you can see from this photo album and this short video.

The team of presenters was comprised of Constable Tom McKay (Peel Regional Police), Gabriela Mattison (Brampton Caledon Community Living Staff), and Sean Travis (Brampton Caledon Community Living Board of Directors). Sean (pictured at podium) is a self-advocate and a graduate of the Crime Prevention Academy offered by the Peel Regional Police.

About 125 registrants that included people with intellectual disabilities, family members, and professionals in various fields dedicated their Saturday morning and afternoon to learning and thinking about the sometimes conflicting desires of independence and safety. Special thanks to The Law Foundation of Ontario for their financial support!

LiveWorkPlay is working on having multiple events of this nature throughout the year. Plans are not set, but a session about the Registered Disability Savings Plan as well as Wills and Trusts is tentatively scheduled for the end of February. Keep an eye on the calendar for updates, or better still, join our Fan Page on Facebook or Follow Us on Twitter.

GILLIAN GILLESPIE PROMOTES SECOND BOOK

Gillian Gillespie is a LiveWorkPlay member but she is better known to the world as an author of children's books! She has recently published her second book in the series known as Wacky Witch And Wizard World: The Adventures Of Grace And Archimedes.

On November 25th Gillian appeared as a guest on the Rogers 22 Television Daytime show where she discussed her book with hosts TL Rader and Derick Fage and did a great job talking about LiveWorkPlay too. Although she invited LiveWorkPlay co-founder Keenan Wellar to join her on the program, you will see from the video of her interview that she did not need any help!

2009 CELEBRATION OF PEOPLE AWARDS

Heartwood House is a federation of 15 non-profit organizations working better together under one roof at 153 Chapel Street in Ottawa. Heartwood House is also home to a remarkable partnership initiative whereby people supported by LiveWorkPlay and other member organizations benefit from a unique arrangement with the City of Ottawa for the management of the OC Transpo Lost & Found.

Heartwood House was one of 41 nominees for one of thirteen Celebration of People awards given out on December 3rd. This annual event commemorates the United Nations Day of Persons with Disabilities. The event has strong support from a variety of private, public, and charitable sector partners and attracted an audience of over 400 people.

There were 3 finalists in the category of The Volunteer Opportunities Award. Sponsored by Volunteer Ottawa, this award recognizes an organization that has shown leadership in creating opportunities for persons with disabilities to engage in meaningful volunteer opportunities. All of the nominees and finalists were deserving of recognition, but it is with great delight that we announce Heartwood House as the 2009 recipient! You can watch a short video from the ceremony or check out a photo album.

The LiveWorkPlay connection extends beyond the many individuals who have benefited from the employment training program. Two of the original ten Heartwood House founders are LiveWorkPlay co-founders Julie Kingstone and Keenan Wellar. The current Heartwood House board of directors is chaired by Keenan alongside four other volunteers including LiveWorkPlay staff members Allison Moores and Fran Childs, who joined the Heartwood board prior to accepting their current positions with LiveWorkPlay.

Maureen Moloughney, Executive Director of Heartwood, is also a founder and has been the leader of the Lost & Found initiative, working closely with Patrick Curran from OC Transpo, who has championed this innovative enterprise from its inception in 2001.

ADVOCACY ON PARLIAMENT HILL

Thanks to two separate invitations from the Canadian Association for Community Living (CACL) LiveWorkPlay members Cooper Gage and Caroline Matte had the opportunity to take part in events at the Parliament of Canada. Cooper Gage was honoured to attend the release of the Annual Report Card on Child and Family Poverty in Parliament West Block.

Many of the issues for combating child poverty are closely related to those that impact people with disabilities and their families especially affordable housing - we are the world's only industrialized country without a national affordable housing strategy! This was a point that Cooper stressed with many of those in attendance, and he particularly enjoyed his chat with Justin Trudeau.

Caroline Matte was invited to participate in the launch of CACL's National Report Card on Inclusion. Caroline made a speech in the Parliamentary Press Gallery of Canada that impressed not only those in attendance, but has received considerable attention on Facebook and YouTube. Her comments were also featured in various CanWest newspapers including the online edition of the Ottawa Citizen and the print edition of the Edmonton Journal.

Special thanks to CACL President Bendina Miller (pictured with Caroline above) as well as Anna MacQuarrie, Don Gallant, and Stella Vilas for extending Caroline the invitation and making her feel welcome.

ART SHOW LAUNCHED DECEMBER 4

When the HeARTwood Gallery graciously offered to host a LiveWorkPlay art show, staff member Allison Moores had to move fast to get it all in place for the opening date. Fortunately two former gallery curators (Kae McColl and Angela Maxwell) accepted her invitation and lent their expertise in mounting the art, and it all came together for a smashing launch party on December 4th. Pictured to the right is artist Michael Hinchcliff.

The gallery was really buzzing thanks to some incredible art that ranged from sketches to paintings to photography. It all came together as Celebrating Community: Artistic Expressions. You can get a flavour for this special evening by watching a short video that includes artist interviews and photos of all the artwork.

WELCOMING NEW PEOPLE FIRST PRESIDENT

On October 24th Kory Earle of Lanark was elected President of People First of Ontario. Kory is already well known to many in the Ottawa area for his advocacy on behalf of people with intellectual disabilities in successfully opposing the picketing of group homes during a strike in his community.

LiveWorkPlay CEO Keenan Wellar recently caught up to the busy Mr. Earle while he was in town for a meeting with government officials. During their breakfast meeting Keenan explained that LiveWorkPlay and other formal and informal groups in the area are very interested in supporting the growth of People First in the Ottawa area. This is a great fit for Mr. Earle's plans. He says he wants to build local chapters in areas where they don't exist, and strengthen membership in places where People First is already active.

If all goes according to plan, People First of Ontario will hold an information meeting in Ottawa sometime between the middle of February and the middle of March. "We work very hard to support self-advocacy for people with intellectual disabilities, but as a provider of supports and services, we cannot support an independent voice in the same way as People First," says Keenan. "It only makes sense that we should promote self-advocacy by facilitating connections between the people we support and an organization like People First.

Congratulations also to David McKillop of Gananoque who finished second in the presidential election: "He was a strong candidate," said Earle. McKillop is well known to many in the LiveWorkPlay community thanks to his wonderful singing and guitar playing in support of various events like his performance at Engines of Success 2009.

VOLUNTEER TEAM CONTINUES TO GROW

Over the past 6 months (since accepting the position of Coordinator of Volunteers and Support Networks) Fran Childs has been visited by a steady stream of newcomers who have completed intake interviews, background checks, and orientation sessions. By the end of December she expects that the team will have tripled in size from 30 to 90!

Not only has the volunteer team expanded, they are more active than ever in contributing to LiveWorkPlay and a better quality of life for people with intellectual disabilities. Thanks to volunteer feedback there have been a series of improvements to strengthen the new one-to-one matching initiative.

"There is so much to think about in facilitating the development of these relationships," says Fran. "But we are all learning together and it is obvious that we are having success. I am getting positive feedback every day!"

LiveWorkPlay also believes that the expansion of the volunteer team is helping create a stronger community. With each person that takes the time to get to know an individual with an intellectual disability on a personal level, to learn about the LiveWorkPlay organization and its work, and to become familiar with the issues and challenges that result in the exclusion of people with intellectual disabilities, a new "inclusion ambassador" is born!

We introduced readers to Carleton University placement student Emily McLean in our September issue, and LiveWorkPlay is confident that no matter what the future holds, she will be a strong inclusion ambassador. As a student in the Bachelor of Social Work program, it's probably fair to say that Emily had no idea what she was getting into when she arrived at LiveWorkPlay. But she learned fast and was soon fitting right in. Emily, you will be missed!

MORE GRASSROOTS FUNDRAISING

The great thing about grassroots fundraisers is they not only raise money for LiveWorkPlay, they tend to be a lot of fun. The one happy problem of late is it is actually getting difficult to keep track of all that has gone on!

On November 1st Robert Bigras and his wife Kate Lusk decided that Robert's 50th Birthday Party would be a kitchen party gathering to benefit LiveWorkPlay and l'Arche. "It was a blast," says LiveWorkPlay co-founder Julie Kingstone. "We are hoping to learn from Robert and inject a bit of his energy into our own Family Feast events."

Greta Leeming Studio’s Competitive Dance Team traded their dance shoes for bowling shoes on October 25th at Westpark Bowling Centre to help support LiveWorkPlay in memory of a beloved and cherished staff member Phyllis Grey. The finally tally was not announced in time to make last month's issue, so we are thrilled to announce that $2800 was raised.

Phyllis's daughter Linda benefits greatly from this [LiveWorkPlay] organization," said organizer Tami-Lynn Caloia. "Special thanks to all who helped by donating prizes, volunteering and to all who participated to support this great cause!"

In other fundraising news, Julie More sent in more than $500 raised through a Walk-a-Pet fundraiser. Contributors participated from all across Canada including Waterloo, Ontario and Burnaby, British Columbia!

The one thing all of this month's grassroots fundraisers have in common is that the lead organizers are not direct relations of anyone that receives services supports or services from LiveWorkPlay. They are all people that are connected to someone who is connected - and they chose to get involved. This is great news, not only because the donations are greatly appreciated, but because it also means that hundreds of new people are learning about LiveWorkPlay, our work, and the people we support for the first time!

EMPLOYMENT SUPPORTS NEWS

Opportunities for professional development are difficult to squeeze into a hectic schedule, but Manager of Employment Supports Jen Bosworth managed to get out to Moncton for a few days and take in the 15th Annual National Supported Employment Conference.

These are challenging times for many Ottawa area employers but LiveWorkPlay is having success in supporting adult members to find and keep paid employment and meaningful volunteer opportunities.

"There will always be ups and downs," says Jen. "It's not LiveWorkPlay that gives people jobs, it's employers that do that, and those employers have to make difficult choices about who to hire and fire."

What LiveWorkPlay does to support employment boils down to three main tasks: 1) helping individuals ready themselves to pursue their employment goals; 2) working with employers to build their interest in hiring a person with an intellectual disability; and, 3) facilitating an ongoing healthy relationship between the individual and their employer.

One key to success is getting a foot in the door, and Jen would like to hear from any of our readers that are willing to facilitate an introduction with an employer in their personal or professional networks. "Almost all of our successes have come thanks to a connection made by a member of the LiveWorkPlay community," says Jen.

EVERYBODY'S WORKING FOR THE WEEKEND

November was jam-packed with fun opportunities for LiveWorkPlay members of all ages. Youth members had a blast at the November 20th Ottawa 67s hockey game. It was according to reports one of the most exciting games of the year. After getting down 3-1, Ottawa managed to score 3 goals in about an 8 minute span during the third period to squeak out a 4-3 victory over the Plymouth Whalers, and the crowd went absolutely wild!

Adult members have been enjoying not only Friday nights (a traditional night out for those who are looking to LiveWorkPlay for support with their weekend social activities) but also a revival of "Saturday Socials" which are informal gatherings hosted by members with some support from LiveWorkPlay staff. One such gathering in November was a housewarming and pool party for Heather Wynn, who has moved into a condominium apartment.

The type of support provided for Saturday Socials is different for each individual. Some only want help in "getting the word out" whereas others ask for assistance with a series of organization tasks. Full-time staff members Anthony Stratton, Grace Hudson, and Daniel Harris as well as part-time staff Jennifer Cunningham have all had a hand in Saturday Socials, and they all report they same thing: as people have learned to get more comfortable with both hosting and being a guest, attendance is up, and so is enjoyment!

FEASTING AND DANCING

Don't forget to register now for LiveWorkPlay's final events of the year! First up is the Festive Family Feast on Friday, December 18. It features a prime rib dinner (vegetable parmigiana for the vegetarians) plus music by Maureen Moloughney!

LiveWorkPlay members are some of the main beneficiaries! See the story below about the Celebration of People awards to learn more about this!

FAMILY CONFERENCE 2009: A QUESTION OF SAFETY

Safety concerns often weigh heavily on the minds of people with intellectual disabilities and the people who support them. There are many mixed messages that sometimes come into conflict with other messages about self-advocacy and community inclusion.

Is it "Don't talk to strangers!" and "Don't answer the door!" or are there new a
nd better ways of being safe and managing risk?

Join our experienced panel comprised of a trainer, self-advocate, and police officer who have researched and implemented safety education designed to meet the needs of individuals and families.

The workshop is Saturday, November 21 at the Hampton Inn Ottawa Conference Centre (200 Coventry Road). It is intended primarily for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, their family members and key supporters, people who work or volunteer in support of people with intellectual disabilities, and those who work in law enforcement and related fields. Enjoy a delicious catered lunch and coffee breaks (included).

The Law Foundation of Ontario is supporting this workshop and will also be supporting future events in February and June, stay tuned!

This workshop explores a unique initiative developed by Brampton Caledon Community Living and Peel Region Police to reduce the risk of people becoming victims of crime by teaching practical skills and strategies that can be easily applied in day-to-day situations.

We are pleased to welcome the conference presenters:

Sean Travis (Self-Advocate)
Heather Marsh (Community Living Brampton-Caledon)
Constable Tom McKay (Peel Regional Police)

2009 CELEBRATION OF PEOPLE AWARDS

Celebration of People is an annual awards program and dinner event first held in Ottawa in 2001. Presentation of the Celebration of People awards takes place each year in conjunction with December 3, designated by the United Nations as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

The awards recognize the achievements and contributions of individuals, businesses and organizations promoting accessibility, inclusion and full community participation by citizens with disabilities.

One of the 2009 finalists for the Volunteer Opportunities Award is none other than Heartwood House! This award, sponsored by Volunteer Ottawa, recognizes a
n organization that has shown leadership in creating opportunities for persons with disabilities to engage in meaningful volunteer opportunities. That is exactly what Heartwood House has been doing since 2001 through the OC Transpo Lost & Found initiative!

Many people with intellectual disabilities involved with LiveWorkPlay are key members of the Heartwood House volunteer team, and we need your help to make sure they can be a part of the celebration! Please click here to make a donation to support the cost of a ticket. And of course by purchasing a ticket for yourself you can be a part of the cheering section and enjoy an exciting evening and a delicious meal!

MARITIME KITCHEN PARTY NEWS

LiveWorkPlay co-founders Keenan Wellar and Julie Kingstone are back from Dieppe, New Brunswick, where they took part in the Maritime Family Kitchen Party, a national gathering of families, self-advocates, and allies working towards a more inclusive Canada. Co-sponsored by Canadian Association for Community Living and the New Brunswick Association for Community Living, one of the conference themes was about expanding our kitchen table discussions and bringing the message of inclusion to the world. Click here for conference photos!

Keenan took part in the Opening Plenary as a guest panelist with Catherine Harrop of CBC Television and Duncan Matheson of BissetMatheson Communications. There is widespread agreement within the Community Living and inclusion movement that greater efforts must be made to change the movement from something that is considered "ours" to a belief in values that are shared by society at large. The panel was in agreement that continuing emphasis on traditional means of communication - such as mainstream media and information meetings - will have limited potential for engaging the general public.

Building on a theme elaborated by Jack Pearpoint, Keenan suggested tapping into personal and professional networks with accessible conversations about the lives of people with intellectual disabilities as a critical means of broadening the movement. This can be done not only with internet tools like Facebook but also through kitchen table conversations that seek to engage those who are not already "in the know."

LiveWorkPlay is trying to put this into practice in many ways. This includes the growing trend of grassroots fundraisers hosted by members of the LiveWorkPlay network - people coming together to enjoy each other's company but also to learn in a casual atmosphere about our work and the challenges facing people with intellectual disabilities and their families. And of course LiveWorkPlay is "out there" on the internet! For example, you can watch us on YouTube, follow us on Twitter, or be a Fan on Facebook!

FAMILY FEAST & NEW YEAR'S EVE

LiveWorkPlay has made changes to Family Fun Night, they are now Family Feast Nights. The main difference is obvious - more food! Join us for the first ever Festive Family Feast at St. Anthony's Banquet Hall on Friday, December 18. Doors
open at 6:30PM, please don't arrive later than 7:00 because the rest of us aren't waiting! In addition to hanging out with people you don't get to see as often as you'd like, enjoy a FEAST for just $10!

Don't delay, get your Family Feast tickets today!

The Feast will be a fun and casual affair. The real PARTY begins December 31 with the LiveWorkPlay New Year's Eve Party. This year we are taking a break from our big public party for a member's only event, gathering at our new location, the Delta Ottawa Hotel & Suites. We will party it down in the Algonquin Room with a professional DJ from Quality Entertainment and a gourmet buffet dinner. Stay the night for a special discount rate of $109. Contact Keenan if you don't have the discount code.

LiveWorkPlay members are welcome to bring friends and colleagues as always. You will just need to purchase the tickets for them and have them pay you back.

CONGRATULATIONS DAVE HINGSBURGER

LiveWorkPlay congratulates David Hingsburger, inductee to the Canadian Disability Hall of Fame. Dave spent several days with the LiveWorkPlay community some 5 years ago, and left a lasting impression.

"For more than 30 years, David has fought to reduce the sexual victimization of people with developmental disabilities. A prolific author, lecturer, and therapist, Hingsburger has campaigned fearlessly for greater awareness of the sexuality of people with disabilities, while also coaching individuals with intellectual disabilities how to recognize and deal with problematic sexual behaviour. Hingsburger's leadership and compassion have made it possible for more Canadians with disabilities to live with the dignity and respect they deserve."

LiveWorkPlay also congratulates Kory Earle, recently elected President of People First of Ontario. Kory is a well-known advocate in the Lanark region and we hope to connect with him soon to help raise awareness of People First in the Ottawa area.

JUST AN ORDINARY NEIGHBOURHOOD HERO

Moira Fuenzalida, a long-time LiveWorkPlay member, was recently featured in the newsletter of the condominium building where she resides. The headline read "Resident's Quick Action Prevents Extensive Fire Damage to Unit."

The abbreviated story is that Moira heard the smoke alarm of her neighbour across the hall, and after determining that they were not at home, she called the condo emergency number. The on duty superintendent evaluated the situation and brought the fire department to the scene.

According to the article, the unit was by then full of smoke and firefighters arrived in time to extinguish a smoldering fire on the stove. The end result: nobody was hurt, and there was minimal damage to the unit.

Moira was quoted in the article as saying "I'm just glad I was home to hear the smoke detector." Three cheers for Moira, just an ordinary neighbourhood hero!

BOARD FOLLOWS UP AGM, LEADS BY EXAMPLE

At the LiveWorkPay Annual General Meeting 2009 on August 27th there was discussion about the impact of small grassroots fundraisers. In 2008-2009 these included such events as the Garden Fairy Hosta Bee, Roger Dodger Volleyball Tournament, Hanes Wine & Cheese, Allison Moores Marathon Sponsorship, and more! Typically these events are hosted by LiveWorkPlay supporters with help from their own network of family, friends, and colleagues and minimal involvement from LiveWorkPlay staff.

The Board of Directors was so impressed with these events and their potential to bring new funds and supporters to LiveWorkPlay that they hosted their own Dinner & Kitchen Party on September 27. The sold out affair featured a specially prepared buffet at Fuschian followed by entertainment at Raw Sugar.

Special thanks to long-time LiveWorkPlay supporters Robert Bigras and Kate Lusk for bringing this concept forward to the Board and organizing the performance by Missy Burgess. The event raised over $1000!

VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT SOARS

At the Annual Orientation on August 27 LiveWorkPlay announced an ambitious plan to radically boost the size and scope of the volunteer team, with particular emphasis on one-to-one matching.

Fran Childs has been on the case since returning to the LiveWorkPlay staff team in the summer as Coordinator of Volunteers and Natural Support Networks, and the early results are overwhelming, with the volunteer team having double in size to about 60! About half of those represent individual matches, with shared interests that range from video games to shooting pool to shopping.

Luke Bailey (pictured) is one of the new recruits to the volunteer team. He is currently spending time with two adult members who share similar social interests. Luke is a student at the University of Ottawa who recently worked at Camp Misquah and decided he wanted to continue making a contribution to supporting people with intellectual disabilities while completing his studies.

Fran reports that there has been a dramatic increase in male volunteers. "What seems to be happening is many of our newest volunteers really appreciate the very specific nature of the opportunities," says Fran.

Some volunteers that first got introduced to LiveWorkPlay through the matching program have come back to Fran to say that they'd be interested in doing more: "It's a great way for people to get engaged with the organization, because the people we support are our strongest community ambassadors!"

LIFE IS NOT A PROGRAM!

Life is not a program: that's the essential guiding philosophy underlying recent changes to the delivery of LiveWorkPlay adult supports and services. Many members and their parents were concerned about the proposed changes, as they were comfortable with the existing "day program" approach. To be sure the transition has been challenging, but after only a month, the good news is in: it is working!

Speaking of working, that's what more and more people are doing. Jen Bosworth, Manager of Employment Supports, has developed new job opportunities with partners both big and small with the result that many adult members have become employed and/or increased their hours of employment. These opportunities range from jobs with major businesses like Tim Hortons to self-employment with paid contracts for dog walking services.

Some interesting and exciting volunteer opportunities have also been developed. For example, if you tune into Fundamentally Sound on CKCU Radio 93.1 these days you may well hear the voice of long-time LiveWorkPlay member Ryan McBride. Ryan is actively contributing behind the scenes, and has also started doing on-air announcements!

In order to increase the availability of learning and social opportunities, Community Options coordinator Daniel Harris has developed numerous projects and gatherings that are not tied to office hours. This includes for example hosting a small group to meet on a weekday evening for a cooking class. LiveWorkPlay has also supported many adult members to enroll in City of Ottawa courses ranging from art to yoga! The photo above was taken by a member of the LiveWorkPlay photography club.

This approach has opened the door to new opportunities for members who are not free during the day due to other commitments, or are simply looking to be active with others in the evening (beyond the weekly opportunities that continue to be offered on Friday nights with staff coordination and the support of the volunteer team).

All of these changes have resulted in a new energy that has spread throughout the LiveWorkPlay community. The amount of coordination, tracking, and follow-up required is somewhat mind-boggling, but the results cannot be disputed: members, their parents, and other supporters continue to report positive outcomes!

PLEASE WELCOME EMILY

LiveWorkPlay is pleased to welcome Emily McLean, a placement student from the Carleton University Bachelor of Social Work program. Emily is a recipient of the 2009 Edith Moore Bursary, but she brings with her more than academic experience - she has also been the owner and manager of pub!

A little experience dealing with chaotic environments is never a bad thing, and Emily has already assumed a number of front-line duties and responsibilities. This includes hosting photography, cooking, and video clubs.

Welcome to LiveWorkPlay!

SETTING SAIL FOR THE MARITIME KITCHEN PARTY

Keenan Wellar and Julie Kingstone will be heading to New Brunswick on October 23rd to represent LiveWorkPlay at the Maritime Family Kitchen Party. Co-hosted by the Canadian Association for Community Living and the New Brunswick Association for Community Living, the conference is a national gathering of families, self-advocates and allies working towards a more inclusive Canada.

For more than half a century, families have come together within the Community Living movement to create communities that accept, value, and include their sons and daughters with intellectual disabilities. One conference objective is to look at new ways of growing the movement, and Keenan will be contributing through participation in a panel discussion as well as delivering a presentation about the benefits of online networking as a community-building tool.

LiveWorkPlay has been connecting with members and the public through tools like YouTube, Blogger, and Facebook for many years. You are encouraged to Become A Fan of LiveWorkPlay!

UNITED WAY: REDISCOVER COMMUNITY

On September 23, United Way Ottawa announced its goal for the 2009 Community Campaign — $31.7 million. With this year’s campaign theme of Rediscover Community, United Way is asking everyone to look at our community in a new light, to contemplate their aspirations for it and to consider United Way as their way to achieve those aspirations. Check out LiveWorkPlay member Analisa Kiskis, featured in a poster that is part of this year's campaign! Just click on the picture to see the full size version.

Do you know a Community Builder? United Way Ottawa’s Community Builder Awards (CBAs) recognize people who make a difference in the lives of others in our community through their volunteer work. United Way’s volunteer recognition team is out and about in the community throughout the year, handing out surprise CBAs to many unsuspecting and well-deserving recipients. In addition to the award, the names of the recipients are inscribed on the Scotiabank Wall of Inspiration, located at Ottawa City Hall. Click here to Nominate A Community Builder.
